How Does Antarctic Bottom Water Cross the Southern Ocean?

چکیده
Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW), which fills the global ocean abyss, is derived from dense water that forms in several distinct shelf regions. Previous modeling studies have reached conflicting conclusions regarding export pathways of AABW across Southern Ocean and degree to originating source regions are blended during their export. This study addresses these questions using passive tracer deployments a 61-year high-resolution (0.1°) ocean/sea-ice simulation. Two “conduits” identified: Weddell Sea- Prydz Bay-sourced together exported mainly Atlantic Indian Oceans, while Ross Adelie Land-sourced Pacific Ocean. Northward transport each occurs almost exclusively (>90%) within single conduit. These findings imply regional changes production may impact three-dimensional structure overturning circulation.

Accelerated freshening of Antarctic Bottom Water over the last decade in the Southern Indian Ocean
Southern Ocean abyssal waters, in contact with the atmosphere at their formation sites around Antarctica, not only bring signals of a changing climate with them as they move around the globe but also contribute to that change through heat uptake and sea level rise. A repeat hydrographic line in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, occupied three times in the last two decades (1994, 2007, an...
متن کاملAbyssal connections of Antarctic Bottom Water in a Southern Ocean State Estimate
[1] Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) is formed in a few locations around the Antarctic continent, each source with distinct temperature and salinity. After formation, the different AABW varieties cross the Southern Ocean and flow into the subtropical abyssal basins. It is shown here, using the analysis of Lagrangian trajectories within the Southern Ocean State Estimate (SOSE) model, that the pathw...

Previous idealized investigations of Southern Ocean overturning have omitted its connection with the Antarctic continental shelves, leaving the influence of shelf processes on Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) export unconsidered. In particular, the contribution of mesoscale eddies to setting the stratification and overturning circulation in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is well establish...
متن کاملAntarctic Ice Sheet fertilises the Southern Ocean
Southern Ocean (SO) marine primary productivity (PP) is strongly influenced by the availability of iron in surface waters, which is thought to exert a significant control upon atmospheric CO2 concentrations on glacial/interglacial timescales. The zone bordering the Antarctic Ice Sheet exhibits high PP and seasonal plankton blooms in response to light and variations in iron availability. The sou...
متن کاملRadiogenic isotope fingerprint of Wilkes Land–Adélie Coast Bottom Water in the circum-Antarctic Ocean
[1] Wilkes Land – Adél ie Coast Bottom Water encompasses the bottom waters formed around the coast of East Antarctica in the area east of Prydz Bay and west of the Ross Sea (90 E–150 E). Here we show that these bottom waters have not only characteristic physical properties, but also carry a distinct radiogenic isotope signal that traces their dispersal. The Nd, Hf and Pb isotopic compositions o...
